When it comes to designing a kitchen, one of the biggest concerns is often storage space. With so many appliances, dishes, and food items to store, it can be challenging to find enough space to keep everything organized and easily accessible. Fortunately, with some thoughtful planning and creative solutions, it's possible to maximize storage space in your kitchen design. In this blog post, we'll explore some tips and tricks for maximizing storage space, with examples from our kitchen projects. 1. Plan Your Storage Space The first step in maximizing storage space in your kitchen is to plan it out. Take stock of everything you need to store in your kitchen and make a list. Then, consider the best storage solutions for each item with your kitchen designer. For example, pots and pans may be best stored in deep drawers or hanging from a pot rack, while spices and small pantry items could be kept in a pull-out pantry or on a spice rack. Planning these choices ahead of time will help you guarantee enough space for a comfortable routine, and also hide most of your kitchenware away from view, giving your space a clean aesthetic. 2. Utilize Cabinet Space Cabinets are a staple in any kitchen, and they can provide ample storage space if used correctly. Consider installing cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling to maximize vertical space. Use pull-out drawers or shelves in lower cabinets to make it easier to reach items in the back. Install dividers and organizers within cabinets to keep items separated and easy to find. Overall, give yourself enough variety so that you can store utensils of different sizes and shapes. 3. Incorporate Shelving Open shelving is a popular trend in kitchen design, and it can be an excellent way to maximize storage space. Install open shelves above your countertops or kitchen island to store frequently used items, such as dishes or glasses. Consider using floating shelves to add storage space without taking up floor space. Tip: make sure you know exactly what you will put on your shelves. If you want to keep them clean and organised make sure you find a good balance between decor, pops of colour, books and kitchenware that you use regularly. 4. Get Creative with Storage Solutions Don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to storage solutions. For example, consider installing a pull-out pantry in a narrow space between cabinets or a vertical pull-out cabinet for baking sheets and cutting boards. Use the space above your cabinets to store large items, such as serving platters or slow cookers. Install a magnetic knife strip or a pegboard to keep utensils organized and within reach. Or use your cabinetry doors for small utensils or a spice rack, as seen below. 5. Make Use of Dead Space Finally, don't overlook the potential storage space in areas that may seem like dead space. For example, install a pull-out spice rack or towel rack on the side of your refrigerator. Use the space under your sink to store cleaning supplies in a pull-out organizer. Add a pull-out tray or drawer beneath your oven to store baking sheets and pans. Or use the back of your island as we have done for our St. Margaret's project. Last thoughts Maximizing storage space in your kitchen design doesn't have to be a challenge. With some thoughtful planning and creative solutions, you can make the most of every inch of space in your kitchen. Consider using these tips to create a functional and organized kitchen that works for your needs, and make sure you discuss them ahead of time with your designer. Need help planning your kitchen?
