How to Make the Most out of Your Kitchen Space

Redesigning the Kitchen space is one of the most popular requests we receive from clients when they first reach out to us. Incorporating an efficient organisational system and a good amount of space into the design has, for that reason, become our priority as well. In the last 40 plus years in business, we have mastered numerous techniques to make the most out of any kitchen space, from smaller to larger scales. Here are some of our best tips.

#1 Use your wall space to create a continuation of cabinets
This might seem like an obvious first step, but it can be overlooked sometimes. When you have long walls in your kitchen, especially with a high ceiling, you should be making the most of this factor, creating cabinetry that follows the lead of those walls, almost like a second skin where you can fit most of your kitchenware.

#2 Incorporate appliances in the cabinetry
The best way to make sure your appliances become a part of the project and blend perfectly with the design is to incorporate them into your cabinetry. Not only is it space saving, but you can place these appliances in strategic heights so that you can avoid bending to put your roast in the oven, for example.

#3 Pull-out drawers
Probably one of our favourite details to add to a project, pull-out drawers are an easy addition to any kitchen to make the most of deep corners. Whether you have a small but tall cabinet section, a corner you can’t reach or a perfect place for a spice rack, using a pull-out drawer on these spaces will not only give you lots of organisation but will also make your life a lot easier to reach your kitchenware or products.

#4 Matryoshka drawers
Yes, drawers inside drawers. There’s great satisfaction in opening one drawer and seeing all the magic hidden behind it when you place other drawers inside it. They are especially great when you have different sizes, allowing you to use them for multiple purposes. From cutlery to your best porcelain or your mugs, the options are unlimited!

#5 Internal drawers with cutlery or utensil inserts
Diving deeper into this topic, there is nothing worse in a kitchen than an unorganised cutlery or utensils drawer, where it takes you long minutes to find what you are looking for. When well designed, these drawers come packed with multiple dividers to make it easier for you to organise all of your bits and pieces in them.

#6 Island organisation
The island can be the standout piece in a kitchen. As it takes centre stage, it tends to be the focal point of the design. The best part about these design elements though is how much extra storage they can add to a kitchen. From drawers to shelves to pull-out mechanisms, there’s an endless variety of combinations you can have in it.

#7 Don’t be afraid of small corners, make the most of them
Small corners can sometimes be the bane of a designer’s existence. However, when in a kitchen you can make multiple uses out of it. In the example below, for instance, we used a tiny corner for thin kitchen utensils, such as chopping boards. You can also use them for a towel rail, as another example, to keep your tea towels organised and hidden away. Just consider what makes more sense for you and the way you inhabit your space.

#8 Use open shelves
Open shelves can be great, not just for organisation, but also to bring some life into your space. Make sure to use transparent vs. opaque textures, whether you fill it with vases or ceramics. This will allow you to have your pasta, rice, flours and sugar organised and will bring in a good balance of colour when placed side by side with the right decor details.

#9 Use door spice racks
Spice racks are always a great addition to your kitchen. Similar to the cutlery topic previously, it can be frustrating when you are looking for a specific spice for your curry and have to take out numerous bottles before you reach the one you are looking for. When you have them organised like in the picture below, it’s a lot easier to keep track of where everything is, making your cooking journey a lot easier and smoother.

#10 Create bespoke designated areas for your favourite items
Are you a wine lover? Then make sure you add space for your bottles or even a wine cooler appliance. Are you a proud owner of a great cooking books library? Then let your books stand out in your kitchen.
There is no point in designing any space if it doesn’t represent and serve you. Let your favourites shine in your space by making them a design feature!

Our conclusions

Designing and building your kitchen can be a truly joyous process. When it’s bespoke to your needs and how you like to live your space, it can make your cooking and even hosting experience memorable.
This roundup of tips was put together to help you make the best decisions when investing in a new project or a renovation, in a way that allows you to make the most of a good design by gaining lots of organisation.
